Dancing Thunder

As I Grow

I’m not afraid to ask questions.

I taught myself my career by finding mentors who were generous with their time and knowledge. I owe an enormous debt to Steve Rundfelt, Alan Rundfelt, Bill Slawski, Jill Whalen, Alan Bleiweiss, and Alan Warner, all of who contributed to my career, answered my questions and never once wavered in their support. They have passed on but will live in my heart with gratitude forever.

I have more mentors today in the SEO and Accessibility industries, whose leadership and wisdom keep me going when the learning gets tough.

Independent Projects

Sometimes I had an idea that worked out. Sometimes, not so much.

Record of things

Dancing Thunder

The first step into the wild wild web. In 1994 I began teaching myself HTML and used Hot Dog to help me learn. Whenever I made a mistake while coding, Hot Dog would bark at me. The first URL I owned was Dancing Thunder’s Playground hosted by AOL. The name, Dancing Thunder, was based on a series of dreams where I was a native american woman named Timid Thunder. I was told it didn’t fit me in this life and to change it to Dancing Thunder. “DT” was one of my online names in the early days. The logo was designed by a coworker when I learned enough to be hired as a webmaster for a local publisher.

Dancing Timber

We moved often. One of the properties we cherished was called “Finn” and it was where we built a barn and riding ring for several horses. The name Dancing Timber was used on and off for experimental websites and was inspired by another property we owed that had a barn built in the late 1700’s and was our first adventure planning for a home business, life with horses, and leaving a house in a development. We were in the trees. I was asked why we moved so often and I said it was because we’re “Growing Dreams”. The sign was a gift that was placed at Finn on the brand new barn we had built. The sign is weathered and gray, and sits in my office to this day.

Peaceful Boho

During the time we lived at the properties I call “Trum”, “Finn”, and “Haven”, I taught myself how to sew, crochet and macrame. This is when I fell in love with colors and textures, weaving and matching things that don’t match. I got over my terror of serger sewing machines and made scented healing wraps for people and horses. The boho bags were always experiments and playful. I taught myself macrame and made lamps, shelves, wall hangings of all sizes, and other items just appeared. I can only describe the macrame process as channeling energy until the story is told and my fingers rest from the weaving. The shop started at the old Trum house and finally closed at the Haven house. I know it will be back someday. My mother sewed and my grand mother, Daisy, was a famous seamstress known for her doll hospital and costumes she made for the antique dolls.
