IE7 Mobile Billboards a Sign of the Times
Some 10 US cities got to see advertising the rest of us won’t get to, and maybe we could care less. According to the IEBlog, mobile billboards chugged around announcing the arrival of IE7. The billboard states “Download with Confidence”.
I thought it rather daring of Tony Chor, Group Program Manager, to write :
If you haven’t tested your website with IE7 yet, please use the tools Scott posted about a few weeks ago to help you prepare.
We have to prepare for hurricanes, marriage and dinner with the family during the holidays.
Why in heaven’s name must we prepare for a new browser?
Stumble it!

You’d think given all the sites that have had to hack some code in order to get something to render properly in pre-7 versions of IE, maybe it’s Microsoft that should be doing more of the prep work to ensure that most of those sites will continue work.
Fortunatetly I haven’t had to use too many hacks so the quick look I took at some sites in IE7 showed them to be holding up so far. I’m keeping my fingers crossed though.

Now Kim, you remember the ‘Florida’ update don’t you? Around the same time of year, and the number of site owners who were inconsolable because at their busiest time of year, they weren’t getting visitors.
Just think the problems site owners will have this year if their site doesn’t work in IE7 because of hacks and things

Oh, and Steven, it’s exactly because of that requirement for backwards compatibility that progreess in the IE platform is so slow. Well, it’s one of the reasons anyway.
They did a lot of talking about fixing certain bugs, and how it would break existing sites.
It was something they considered, and tried using as a reason for not fixing certain things.
I think many of the interested web devs said “sod the people who code badly, we want standards support”.
There’s a certain amount of balance, and is also why there is quirks mode. when the DTD isn’t correct/complete.
