Sooooo many people thought I’d wimped out by not allowing comments in my blog. Since switching over to WordPress last week, I decided to give it a whirl. The first 48 hours were basically spam free, with only a regular trackback to a site that reposted my entire posts in full (tacky).
The day after that, on the third day, all hell broke loose.
So, on Sunday, I installed a spam blocker. Less than 24 hours later, it’s blocked nearly 500 spam comments.
In school classrooms, while growing up, I used to become infuriated whenever we were given something responsible by the teacher, or asked to follow a rule that made getting along as a group fair and easy to do. When someone in that group broke the rule, or more likely, misbehaved, the teacher removed the priviledges for the entire class. The punishment applied to the entire class, rather than the person who ruined it for everybody. That meant that those of us acting responsibly or mature, weren’t rewarded for our good behavior.
After being punished and losing things of value or enjoyment over and over, after awhile, there’s no more incentive to do the right thing.
I’m not going to punish the whole classroom. But, don’t blame me when the Internet is no longer free and the people you like don’t want to play with you anymore.

Kim - too funny.
My kids aren\’t afraid of me either. (My threats are either completely based on logic or totally not threatening.)
Kim, whay don’t you moderate the comments? That’s why I’m gonna try…
Duh, I just saw you did.
It won’t be enough Sophie. What happens is the automated ones never see the part about being moderated. Like the humans that built them, they don’t read. heh.
I need the same spam block for my Blog. Getting rid of 70+ spam posts per day is a pain in the A**
I’ve been using the “Bad Behavior” plug-in. Link is in the footer. I believe it can be used on other sites besides Wordpress blogs.
So far, it’s been great. And, it was a piece of cake to install.
Instead of removing comments form, make it with JavaScript write functions, this way automated spam won’t get them that easy
Silly idea..
